Bijapur Lingayat Education Association
BLDEA (Bijapur Lingayat Education Association) is a leading education organization in the North Karnataka region. It has a legacy of more than 100 years and 75 education institutions under its banner, which comprise professional institutes, colleges of humanities and social sciences, public schools and research institutes.
BLDEA's goal is to use education as a tool to bring about social and economic transformation in the North Karnataka region, empower women and the oppressed, reduce social inequality in educational opportunity and contribute to national development.
BLDEA has laid considerable emphasis on imparting quality education, cutting across professional and general institutions, and creating new standards in research and allied activities.
Inception
The association was established on October 23, 1910, by Vachana Pitamaha Dr. P. G. Halakatti, a towering literary figure and a social reformer. In 1914, BLDEA acquired the New English School from the Basel Mission, Germany, which had about 83 students, and renamed it the Siddeshwara Secondary Education School. The state government later granted six acres of land to support the organization's growth.
Period of Growth
Beginning in 1942, under the leadership of Shri Shri Sanganabasaveshwar Maha Shivayogigalu, the association undertook significant expansion, establishing numerous primary, secondary and higher educational institutions across the region.
Foraying into Professional Education
During the 1960s, Dr. B. M. Patil established multiple professional colleges — including engineering, pharmacy, nursing and medical institutions — along with a teaching hospital, extending the association's reach into professional and technical education.
Pursuing Higher Goals
Dr. M. B. Patil modernized curricula and successfully advocated for the establishment of a university, resulting in the creation of BLDE University on February 29, 2008.
Mission in Backward Areas
Today BLDEA operates 75+ institutions across recognized economically disadvantaged regions of the Vijayapura and Bagalkot districts, serving students without any discrimination based on sect, caste, religion or creed.
